Metallographic Testing

Metallographic Testing

Metallography is the study of the microstructure of materials. Analysis of a material’s microstructure with a metallurgical microscope helps evaluate if the material was processed appropriately, and is thus a crucial step in determining product reliability and determining why a material failed.

Microstructure evaluates the heat treatments. The grain and crystalline structure of metals vary as they go through the melting, cooling, and working processes. Sohm Lab’s metallography professionals investigate the microstructure of materials and report the findings to their clients.

Details of Metallographic Tests Performed at Sohm

  • Microstructure Examination
  • Grain Size determination
  • Inclusion rating (Method A & D)
  • Decarburization Test
  • Coating Thickness
  • Ferrite by Ferritoscope
  • Ferrite by Metallography/Area Fraction (Two Phase Structure)
  • Determination of Detrimental Phases in Duplex Stainless steels
  • Nodular Count/ Inter metallic phases
  • Macro Examination of Forging/Mock up sample
  • Macro Examination of Fillet Welded Sample
  • Macro Etch Test on Pipe
  • Macro Test on Welded Plate

This type of test is also used to characterise and evaluate welds, as well as to certify processes and employees (welders, brazers, welding operators). Lab technicians make use of the most up-to-date technology :

  • Metallurgical Microscope (Conation)
  • Stereo Microscope (Metzer)
  • Metallographic polishing and Etching are carried out internally.
